The Byington family papers. Part 2, 1822-2001 (bulk 1860-1910).

The Byington family papers: Part 2 contains postcards, letters, and printed material documenting the life and times of Aaron Homer Byington and other members of the Byington family. Of special interest are postcards sent to and from A. Homer Byington in Naples, where he served as U.S. consul at the turn of the twentieth century. The postcards describe life in Naples, volcanic activity there, and even an occasion when the King of Italy took off his hat out of respect for the American flag flying over Byington's residence. Other material touches on nineteenth century American politics. Among the items in the collection are a pamphlet by James G. Blaine, an original pen-and-ink drawing of the exterior and stage of Ford's Theater, with a carefully annotated drawing of the escape route taken by John Wilkes Booth following the shooting of President Lincoln, engravings of Ulysses S. Grant, black fringe from the funeral bier of Lincoln, and typed manuscripts about A. Homer Byington, his wife Harriet Sophia Richmond Byington, and Homer Morrison Byington, Jr.
